Joan Janet (MacKenzie) Martin

Martin, Joan Janet (MacKenzie) – born February 4, 1934 in Truro, N.S. Joan was the daughter of the late William and Jean (Pelton) MacKenzie and step-daughter of the late Elwin Barrett, Truro. Joan went to Toronto in the 1950’s and worked for Eaton’s for thirteen years and at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, both in the accounts office. She also worked for East York Community Care, taking care of seniors in their homes. Joan and her husband retired to Truro in 1994. She was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Social Circle Group, as well as the Good Times Seniors Club at the Truro Legion and the Good Neighbours Club, Palmer Street. Joan was an active member of the Scottish Society of Colchester. She did voluntary work with Palliative Care at the Colchester Regional Hospital from 1998 to 2005. Joan loved to bowl, dance, travel and walk. She is survived by daughter, Valerie (Paul) Sheppard, Brooklin, ON; son, Don (Cathy), Toronto, Ontario; granddaughter Jennifer (Chris Stephens), Brooklin, Ontario; sister, Vannessa MacAloney, Parrsboro; brother Gordon, Truro. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Don; brothers, Don, George, Bill; and loving grandson, Paul. Visitation will be held from 7- 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1st with the funeral at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 2nd, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Brian Ross officiating. Interment in the spring in Watson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.     “may you know that looking after joan was a pleasure she was so gentle and kind in her speech and manner when i told her she looked like her son tho she didnt talk she had a big smile-Don thank you for getting home to see her before passing Valerie she was just a lovely person that god let us have for a little while you and we will miss her greatly”
