Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: January 13th, 1966
Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: January 31st, 2012
It is with the deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend Barry on Jan. 31, 2012.
Barry is survived by his loving wife Joanne of 24 years; daughters, Jennifer (Daniel) Ferguson, Kristine and Victoria; and only granddaughter Sophie; sisters, Juanita (Rick) MacKenzie, Elizabeth Pats, Cheryl; and brother, Terry (Helen); his mother, Lillias; mother-in-law, Joan MacLean; sisters-in-law, Linda (Brent) Duff, Margie Babineau (Donnie) and Carol (Gordie) Lynk; many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles who he cherished.
His long conversations of the shipping industry with his best friends Vlad Churney and Jeff Langille were always enjoyed.
Prior to a long illness with Systemic Mastocytosis, Barry was employed as a marine engineer with Cal-Dive International on the Deep Sea Vessel, Uncle John. He had a passion for the sea and engineering that only few could understand. Barry travelled the world during his career sailing with Stolt Parcel Tankers Inc., Confidence and Pride Tankers. His most memorable position was with Strait Crossing, HLV Svanen constructing the Confederation Bridge, P.E.I. He was also employed with Kent Line Ltd., Upper Lake Shipping, Reliance Offshore, and Atlantic Towing Ltd.
Barry received his Marine Engineering and associated training with the Nautical Institute Campus, Port Hawkesbury; Texas A&M University; Warsash Marine Centre, Hampshire, U.K.
Barry was known for his love of needing to know how everything worked mechanically and he loved to share this wealth of information with everyone. His captivating conversations will be missed by all who had the privilege of visiting or calling. He was never “a man of few words”.
His daughters and granddaughter were his pride and joy and they will miss him deeply but his memory will live on in their daily lives as he has taught them to be strong and speak their mind.
Barry was predeceased by his father, John Dilbert Laite and niece, Tonya Kelly-Lepe.
There will be no visitation by family request. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 4, 2012, at the chapel of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Mathew Swan officiating. Interment to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the research of orphan diseases or Mastocytosis Society www.mastocytosis.ca.
Online condolences may be made on our web page at www.chantfuneralhome.com.

My deepest condolences to all of you. I've just learned about this and in shock.
Barry made himself available to anyone and everyone living with mastocytosis who reached out to him. He has long been a valuable support to many fellow Canadians dealing with the same health issues. I remember speaking with him about the lengths he had to go to due to this illness. This is just so sad and words are failing me right now. Please know that we're here for you at any time.
