Stevenson, Joyce Lilian (Barber) – died peacefully on March 16, 2012 in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche. Born in England in 1920, she was the daughter of the late William and Maud (Creech) Barber. During the Second War she served six years in the WAAF, first as a Cipher Officer, operating an Enigma machine to decode intercepted German messages, and later as a Signals Officer in Coastal Command, which involved the protection of ships travelling between the U.K. and North America. After leaving the service she trained as a doctor at the London School of Medicine for Women. She married Hugh Stevenson in 1952 and practiced medicine until the birth of her children. In 1959 they emigrated to Canada and became Canadian citizens, moving to various parts of Canada (Ontario, Manitoba and Nova Scotia). In Ontario she obtained other post-graduate degrees and in 1979 retired with her husband to Bayhead, near Tatamagouche. She soon became involved in several local volunteer activities and spent nine years on the Board of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, twenty-five years on the board of the Northumberland Arts Council and the Willow Lodge Auxiliary and fifteen years on the Community School Council. She worked with the Elementary School Literacy programme from its inception. Her main interests were music (She sang in the London (England) University Choir, The Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and the Ottawa Choral Society Choir) and painting (her works have appeared in galleries in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and in the U.S.). She was an avid reader and gardener, never able to resist buying new plants. She is survived by her loving husband, Hugh and daughters Charlotte Stevenson, Sarah Stevenson (David), Alison Stevenson-Lee (Dave) and Bridget McKessock (Jeff) and grandchildren John, Helen, Ben, Mark and Luke. Cremation has taken place. No visitation. Memorial Service to be held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Wallace, where she was a long-time member, on Saturday, March 24 at 11 am.
