BARRETT, Lloyd Wilson “Bud”– Passed away at home with his family on Saturday, March 24, 2012.
Born September 3, 1930, Sydney N.S. (Whitney Pier). Son of the late John and Jessie (Sweetland) Barrett.
Graduated from Sydney Academy at the age of 16 and started working for the Royal Bank in Sydney.
After 31/2 years at bank work in Sydney, Louisburg and Halifax, Bud responded to a call for recruits by the RCMP. He was engaged in January, 1951 and retired after almost 35 years in 1985, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Postings after graduation from Ottawa and Regina training Depots were in Newfoundland (Deer Lake, Fogo, Port Saunders), Moncton, NB, Ottawa HQS, Ont. 1960 - 1972 and Halifax HQS, NS, 1972 - 1985. During his posting to Ottawa, Bud was assigned to the Cryptographic Section and had the opportunity to travel across the country installing “crypto” equipment.
Bud started his 3rd career in 1985 with NS Lands and Forests (now DNR) as “Communications Equipment Supervisor” and completed 7 years working at the Shubenacadie Forest Fire Control Centre.
Family, cottage life (Pugwash) and Amateur Radio (VE1CDA) occupied his spare time since retiring in 1992.
Bud was a former Elder of Woodlawn United Church and Woodlawn Kiwanis Club and Bud and Mary are members of Woodlawn United Church.
Predeceased by parents John and Jessie Barrett, brother Roy at infancy, nephew Paul Barrett.
Survived by wife Mary of 55 years (the former Mary Brown of Fogo, NL); children David (Mabel) Barrett, Dartmouth, Susan (Armindo “Zay”) Barrett-Silva, Mineville, Melanie (Craig) Barrett, Dartmouth; grandchildren Heather and Cheyenne; brothers George (Geraldine), Dartmouth, Raymond (Mildred), Sydney, NS; nieces Ruth and Brenda; nephews Keith, Gene, Kevin, and other family members.
Bud, Dad, Grampie will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
The family wishes to express appreciation to CH staff of VON, 6A Centennial, Cancer Care Prog., Palliative Care.
Arimathea Funeral Cooperative is assisting the family. Memorial Service to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 4:00 pm at Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Rd, Dartmouth. Reception to follow. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Cancer Society or any charity of your choice.
