Maria Hiscock

It is with great sadness that the Hiscock Family announces the passing of Maria Eunice Hiscock, originally from Rose Blanche and living in Burgeo since 1939. Family and friends celebrated Maria's 90th Birthday just two weeks before her death. Maria was a homemaker and raised nine children alongside husband Ronald for forty-two years until his death in 1981. She was an excellent cook, well known for making "chow" and "lassie wicks" and "brawn,” and served her community through her husband's volunteerism in the Loyal Orange Lodge and Anglican Church in her early years. Maria was a seamstress for years and made hundreds of quilts during her lifetime, which will now become cherished heirlooms for her children and grandchildren. She continued to knit until she became ill three days before her death, producing socks, gunning mitts, and tea towels that she loved to share with family and friends. Fiercely independent, Maria had a great sense of humour and was fondly known by her family and friends as the "Queen Mother". The Hiscock Families are blessed to have shared in Maria's tremendous life and will carry her bright and beautiful legacy into the future. She leaves to mourn and carry on her legacy of love five sons, Joe (Liz), Roy (Moira), Rex (Gabe), Leslie (Bonnie), Dale (Eva); three daughters Gladys (Dale), Joyce (Gary), and June. She leaves behind a legacy including 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a large circle of friends from around the world. The funeral service was held March 31st at St. John the Evangelist Church by Rev. Maryrose Colbourne with assistance from Fillatre's. Interment followed at Burgeo Community Cemetery.
