Karl 'Fred' Sparling

Born In: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: April 6th, 2012

Karl Frederick Sparling passed away peacefully Friday, April 6, 2012, from the complications of Alzheimers at Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay where he resided for the past two years.
Born in Halifax, June 6, 1922, he was the last surviving child of Karl and Ethel (Richardson) Sparling.
Fred graduated from Sydney Academy and started work at the general office at Sydney Steel. Fred served in the Second World War as a signalman from 1943 to 1946 with the 3rd Canadian Division. Fred saw action starting with Juno Beach, through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and finally Germany. Following his military service, he was employed again with Sydney Steel until his retirement as a metallurgist. Fred was a long-standing active member of the Faith Baptist Church congregation where he served in a number of capacities including as Deacon.
Fred’s engaging smile and dry humour endeared him to all, not the least Florence, who happily moved from the sun of Southern California to make home and family with the dapper solider from Sydney. You could tell Fred was in a good mood when you heard him whistle. Suffice it to say, we heard him whistling a lot.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Florence (Elmsley) Sparling; daughter, Jean, Mississauga, Ont.; and sons, Bob (Lillian), Sydney, David (Carmel), Edmonton, Alta., and Lloyd (Michele), Oakville, Ont. Fred is also survived by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his sister, Eiliene McConnell, and brother Roy, Sparling.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Canadian Bible Society or a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank the staff at Taigh Na Mara for providing Dad with loving care and dignity while he resided there.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Fred will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at S. W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Dan Biggar officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As so well said in Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “To everything there is a season”, and Fred was blessed with many joyful seasons as he has blessed us by his presence.
