Passed on: April 7th, 2012
On Saturday, April 7, 2012, Cyril Fleming was called home. Waiting with open arms were his loving wife Catherine ‘Cap,’ his infant children, Melanie and Jeffery and other loved ones.
Born a coal miner’s son in New Waterford, N.S., June 7, 1920, to Thomas Fleming and Florence Rigby.
He proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during the Second World War where he met Cap, the love of his life.
Married in 1944, Cy and Cap moved west with their young family and settled in Dundas, the town they would call home for the next 60 years. Cy and Cap loved to entertain and the door to 27 Hatt St. was always open.
He was a longtime member of the Dundas legion branch 36, was a founding member of the Cactus Capital Retirees Golf Club and for years was the voice of the Dundas Chiefs. Come rain or shine he was a familiar sight walking the streets of the Valley Town and his love of children made him the Santa of choice for downtown Dundas.
Cy was also an avid curler, golfer, golf club thrower and was a weekly threat at legion card games.
Left to celebrate Cy’s life are his sister, Deannie White (Art); the 7Ms, Maggie (Wayne Van Sickle), Maureen (Del Britz), Michele (Peter Penner), Michael (Sue Mangan), Mark (Janet Macintyre), Marilyn (John Meagher), Mary Catherine and daughter by choice, Anne P. Roach. ‘Papa’ was cherished by his grandchildren, Ryan Van Sickle, Melanie (Shawn Meadows), Zack Fleming (Jaimee), Michele Fleming (Craig), Katie and Sarah Grace Meagher. His larger than life spirit will live on in his great-grandchildren, Hannah Catherine, Jack Michael and soon to be Rian Grace Meadows. Also remembering Cy during this time and celebrating his memory are several nieces and nephews.
Extra special thanks to Dr. Anna Emili for her compassion and superb care and because she “got him.”
Cy’s family will welcome friends to a visitation at Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas, on Wednesday, April 11 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., with a time for a special remembrance beginning at 7 p.m. This time is open for those who wish to share their memories of Cy. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 12, 2012, in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Villa, 50 Governor’s Rd., Dundas, Ont.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Campaign Life Coalition or Canadian Diabetes Association.
Cy was strong and stubborn till the very end. His feistiness and love of life and family is an inspiration to all that knew him. Please sign Cy’s online book of condolence at www.catteleatonandchambers.ca.
