It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Joseph Penny, 70, of Scotchtown on April 23, 2012, at New Waterford Hospital.
Harold was a mechanic for 35 years at Pembroke Service Station. Following retirement in 1989, he developed a green thumb and thoroughly enjoyed tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. Harold was a member of the former St. Michael’s parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his ‘71 Dodge Demon that was referred to as ‘his girl’. He also enjoyed baking and was known for his delicious cinnamon rolls and homemade bread. Harold especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his father, Joe VanDonick, Scotchtown; wife, Marcella (Gouthro); daughter, Karen (Steve) Goss, Ontario; sons, Harold (Danette Fraser), New Waterford, Darren (Ralphlynn MacKenzie), Scotchtown; brothers, Joey (Rose) VanDonick, Ontario, Louis (Gloria) VanDonick, Stellarton, Johnny (Delores) VanDonick, Glace Bay; sisters, Jean Knapman, Newfoundland, Frances Martin, Pictou; grandchildren, Alyssa Goss, Amanda Goss, Kyle Baker, Devon Penny, Ryan Penny and Dylan Muise; many nieces and nephews.
Harold was predeceased by parents, Harold Penny and Tillie (Bourgeois) and grandson, Darren Penny.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in Harold's memory may be made to the New Waterford Rotary Club.
