TOMS, Larry Arthur – 58, Pensacola, FL, passed away on December 9, 2009 due to an aortic dissection.
Born in Gander, N.L., he was the son of Arthur W. Toms and Elizabeth Toms (nee March) and spent his early years in La Scie, N.L. He started his career in radio communications with JML Electronics, and then Canadian Marconi Co. From there, he joined Adga Inc working at the rocket range in Churchill, and the high altitude balloon launch in Gimli, MN. In 1980, his success led him to the Canadian Pacific Railway where he replaced outdated software with expert systems that were to become the first expert systems to be used by a corporation in its daily operations. In 1987, he left CPR to continue developing his Locomotive Oil Analysis Expert System, working both independently and for GasTOPS Ltd (Ottawa and Pensacola, FL). The culmination of this work resulted in, Machine Oil Analysis: Methods, Automation and Benefits, now an industry reference book in its 3rd edition. In recent years, he established with his wife, Allison, Lubrication and Fluid Power, Inc. which published the technical Lubrication and Fluid Power Journal.

Larry is survived by his wife, Allison; son, Eric (SSGT USMC ret.) and his wife, Devin (Spring Hill, TN); son, Christopher (Sgt. USMC) (Bristow, VA); mother, Elizabeth (Victoria, BC); twin brother, Maxwell and his wife, Sandra (Carleton Place, ON); sister, Karen and her husband, David Wright (Victoria, B.C.);and sister, Elaine (Halifax, N.S.). He was predeceased by daughter, Carolyn and father, Arthur.
