NEW GLASGOW – Laura Elizabeth (MacKay) Fraser, age 95, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at home on April 28, 2012.
Born in Charleston, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Harriett (Emery) MacKay.
She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 50 years, Garfield R. Fraser and her brother Kenneth MacKay of Kenzieville.
Laura is survived by special cousins, Barbara McNabb, New Glasgow; Marie MacKay, Trenton. She is also survived by nieces, Ethel Hazeldine (Keith), Greenfield; Margaret Spicer, Truro; nephew, John Fraser (Joyce), Pictou Landing, as well as many other nieces and nephews.
In her early years, Laura taught Business at the Maritime Business School in New Glasgow and continued teaching at the Nova Scotia Community College until her retirement in 1975. She was an adherent of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow and was a member of the church choir for over 50 years. Laura and her husband, Gar, spent many happy years at their cottage in Caribou River and she continued to spend her summers there until her death with the help of her wonderful caregivers. For the past 10 years, she was surrounded by very special caregivers: Mary Jane, Marion, Maxine, Ruth, Heather and Cathy.
Her family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Trinity United Church with Rev. Dr. Norman Marple and Rev. Dr. Jim Shaffner officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Laura’s memory may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
