Verna Elaine (Barclay) Hunter

Hunter, Verna Elaine (Barclay) – Truro
The passing occurred on May 5, 2012 of Verna Elaine Hunter (Barclay) at Debert Court Senior Complex. Born in Truro, Feb.14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Warren Barclay and Mabel Barclay (Faulkenham). Predeceased by her husband, George Russell Hunter, sister, Margaret MacKenzie (Barclay), brother, Lewis Barclay, daughter, Christene Murdock (Hunter), son-in-law, Ross John Archibald. She is survived by her sister, Alice Alford (Barclay); daughter, Karen Archibald; niece, Judith Castell; son-in-law, Alan Murdock; brother-in-law, Jack Hunter; grandchildren, Suzanne (Greg) Perry, Debbie (Richard ) Roode, Michael (Christine) Archibald, Tony (Amy) Archibald, Jennifer Murdock, Heather Murdock, Andrew Murdock, 9 great-grandchildren & many nieces and nephews. Having lived most of her years in the town of Truro, Verna is best known to the rest of the world as the Verna in Verna’s Pastry shop; which she ran with her husband George for multiple decades. It is hard to imagine anyone over the age of 40 who does not remember the brownies, cookies or the smell of fresh French bread and biscuits that would come from that shop. The special occasion cakes, especially the wedding cakes that were done with such care and art will be something that many of us remember for years to come. Verna was an avid member of the Rebecca lodge, First United Church, Peoples Church, a strong community member always there to lend a hand whenever needed. A lover of animals she always had a beloved pet. This love transferred on to her vast collection of Teddy Bears in later years. Cats and bears were definitely close to her heart. She will be sadly missed by family and friends alike. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to the staff of Debert Court for their excellent care and love to Verna in her final days. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 9 from 1 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. with a Rebecca Lodge Service at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service, Pastor Ken Fillmore officiating with interment in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer society or the Recreational Department at Debert Court.
