Matthew Gerald Fitzgerald

Born In: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: September 5th, 1996

Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: May 12th, 2012

Our lives were changed forever on Saturday, May 12, 2012, when Matthew Gerard Fitzgerald, 15, our beloved son, brother, grandson and nephew passed away as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Our family mourns this young man whose life was cut tragically short and whose dreams will never materialize.
Born in Halifax, Matthew was the son of Natalie Paris (Jim) and Brian Fitzgerald (Jean Samuel).
A Grade 10 student at Sydney Academy, Matthews’ talents and abilities were endless. He could build and fix just about anything and loved tinkering with old cars. Matthew was often the family member called on to assemble anything with many parts and complex instructions as he so enjoyed the satisfaction of the finished product.
Matthew played a variety of sports and pursued many outdoor activities spending countless hours skiing and snowboarding at Ben Eoin then shifting to skateboarding when the weather turned warm. He played hockey since he was five, most recently with the Sydney Steelers, dominating on defence given his ability and physical strength. Matthew enjoyed hitting the trails with his dirt bike and ATV and then jumping in the pool for a swim.
Matthew made friends easily. Nicknamed ‘Fitz’ by those closest to him he had a genuine kindness that radiated and a little smirk that endeared him to others. His special friend Kaitlin Colbourne was one of the people who made Matthew the happiest.
Despite his stature he was the baby in the family and brought much joy to those around them. Like most 15-year olds he tested his parents regularly but was just as quick to leave a note to his Mom Natalie telling her how much she meant to him. From the moment Matthew was born, she was his greatest champion and advocate and will sadly miss their nightly chats. Brian was a devoted Dad and was always on the sidelines cheering for Matthew in whatever was his latest pursuit. He will miss their hockey road trips and everyday companionship. For his siblings, Julianne and Brad, and their companions, Jeff MacLeod and Kayla Yhard, the loss of their brother will leave a tremendous void. That little pain in their side growing up helped create some incredible memories over the years.
Matthew is survived by his loving mother, Natalie (Jim) and dad, Brian (Jean); sister, Julianne; brother, Brad; stepsister, Whitney Paris; stepbrother, Christopher Paris; grandmother, Alice Almond; aunts and uncles, Charlene MacKinnon (Kevin), Deanna Gallaway (Dave), Allison Donovan (Blair), Michael Almond (Krista), Darlene MacKinnon (Steven), John Brent Fitzgerald (Lindsay); many cousins and a whole lot of friends.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Michael Gerard Almond and paternal grandparents, Jack and Delores Fitzgerald.
Visitation for Matthew will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, May 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a funeral mass Thursday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service at Ashby Legion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Loaves and Fishes.
