Born: December 29th, 1922

Passed in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada

It is with great sadness we announce the passing on May 13, 2012, of a beloved husband, wonderful father, caring brother, attentive uncle and trusted friend.
Life began for Gord at the corner of “Beech and Vale”, North Sydney, Cape Breton on Dec. 29, 1922, born to Marion MacKenzie (nee Appleby) and Daniel Christie MacKenzie. Growing up in a large loving family gave rise to many great stories which always entertained and Gord loved to share.
He went on to Dalhousie University earning the Graeme Fraser Award, of which he was immensely proud, for student leadership, scholarship and community involvement. His years at Pine Hill and Dal always brought him fond memories and much laughter. He graduated in 1953 with his DDS and set up practice in good old North Sydney. He was an active member of St. Matthew-Wesley United Church until, after moving to Boularderie, Cape Breton, he became very active in the St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or serving as Clerk of Session, treasurer and Church Elder.
Upon retirement he started a second “career” with the Northside Golden K, being a charter member and serving in various capacities staying active until the end. He was especially proud of his involvement with the establishment of the local Meals on Wheels program. Throughout his retirement generations of former patients would often greet him like an old friend.
As a family many happy summers were spent at the trailer along Amherst Shore enjoying the warm water and carefree hours along the Northumberland Strait with brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
It is a rare gift for someone to light up a room with both their wit and intellect. Thank you Dad for casting a beautiful shine over ours and so many lives!
He is survived by his wife, Mae (nee MacLeod); daughter, Marion, Toronto; son, Graeme (Kim), Sackville; sisters, Ethel and Mildred, North Sydney; brothers, George (Mary), North Sydney, Rev. Gilmour (Gladys), Fredericton; special friend and neighbour, Mabel MacEachern; along with many caring nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, John Alexander ‘Jackie’ and Daniel Chalmers, brothers-in-law, Elliot Anderson, Keith Jackson and sister-in-law, Eleanor MacKenzie.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John’s United Church Building Fund, Big Bras d’Or, or the Northside General Hospital Foundation, North Sydney.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or. All are welcome. A private family burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
