Alvin I. Dust, born March 20, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, died December 27, 2009 at Stirling Heights Long-Term Care Facility, Cambridge, Ontario. In WW II, he served with distinction with the U.S. Army Signals Corp in the Pacific theatre. Afterward, he earned his Ph.D. in English Restoration literature (Charles Cotton's works) from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1959. He accepted a position as one of the original members of the English Department at the newly founded University of Waterloo. Professor and mentor of many, he taught students in courses ranging widely, from Rhetoric to Drama to Shakespeare, retiring in 1990; he continued to teach a distance learning course in Shakespeare until 2001. Dr. Dust was active in Catholic education and served as a Bishop's appointee and later Chairman of the Board of Governors that oversaw St. Jerome's and St. Mary's Catholic High Schools in Kitchener. Dr. Dust was tireless in his support for full provincial funding for Catholic high schools and in fundraising efforts prior to the institution of full support. He loved his family, his faith, English literature, rare books and bibliography in general, a good vigorous intellectual debate on almost any topic, and his pet cats - not necessarily nor consistently in this order. Alvin was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Verne Cecille (nee Purcell) and is survived by his eldest son Julian (Associate Professor of Chemistry, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Corner Brook, NL), his daughter Andrea (Veterinary Doctor, Ayr, Ontario) and his son Evan (Transportation Consultant, Vancouver, Washington, U.S.A.). He is also survived by his grandsons, Andrea's son Michael Zavitsky and Evan's sons, Nicholas and Andrew Dust, as well as nephews, nieces and cousins throughout the United States. The family thanks the Staff of Stirling Heights Home, most especially the staff of Blair House, for their care of Alvin and for their solicitude. Prior to admission to Stirling Heights, Alvin had in-home care through the Seniors for Seniors agency and the family is grateful to all his caregivers, particularly Karen Knechtel. The kindness of clergy in performing the rites of Anointing of the Sick and Last Rites are appreciated. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Waterloo, Dr. Dust's home parish, on Wednesday, December 30. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Alzheimer and Cancer Societies, St. Mary's Hospital Building Fund, and in keeping with his love of cats, Pet Trust, c/o The Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph) and Toronto Cat Rescue, are greatly appreciated. Dad, Pax Requiem and God love you.
