Sister Antoinette Chiasson (formerly Rose Cecilia), 83, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, motherhouse, on Saturday, May 26, 2012. She was in the 63rd-year of her religious life.
Born in Margaree Forks, N.S., Sr. Antoinette was one of 16 children of the late Moses and Mary (Doucette) Chiasson.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in August, 1947, pronounced her first vows two years later in 1949, and her perpetual profession of vows in August, 1952.
Sr. Antoinette taught school in Eskasoni, Margaree, Ingonish, East Bay and Dingwall. She received a teaching diploma from the Provincial Normal College, Truro, a BA in French from the University of Moncton, N.B., and a Masters Degree in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb. Sister spent a sabbatical year of study in Jerusalem. Over the years she also ministered in household management, Ottawa, Ont., catechetics, Trenton, N.S., as a spiritual director, Bethany Center, community leader, Martha Centre, Lethbridge, Alta., librarian, St. Martha’s Hospital, and assistant in the archives, heritage and library at the Motherhouse. In 1986, Sr. Antoinette was one of the pioneer sisters who began ministry in St. Kitts, West Indies.
Besides her parents, Sister Antionette was predeceased by sisters, Bertha Lacroix, Margaret Connors, Rita Chiasson and Regina Doucet and brothers, Alcide, Ephrem, Gabrial, Gerard, Isidore and Leo.
She is survived by sisters, Elizabeth Lunny, Pauline MacKinnon, Yvonne Levert, and brothers, Emile and Lawrence.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Monday, May 28, at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, May 29, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
