Robert Edgar Wood

With great sadness we announce the death of Robert Edgar Wood , May 27,2012. He is survived by his wife, Doreen; his children Carol (Lyle), Darlene (Jim), Janet (Jack), Lynn (Michael), Meryl (Larry), Guy (Sharon), Scott ( Donna); sixteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; one sister; and numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and their families. He was predeceased by an infant daughter Jeanne; his parents Robert and Kate; and two brothers Russell and Allyn. Edgar was born at Islay, Alberta and moved as a child to the Smiley District in Saskatchewan. During the depression his parents relocated the family to a homestead at Ladder Valley. From the age of 12 he assumed an adult role. Upon his marriage to Doreen McCreight, May 27, 1940, they moved to Prince Albert where Edgar was employed at Burns until he entered the Canadian Army. He served in the communications section of the British Army in Sicily, Italy, Algeria and the Netherlands. Upon his return, Doreen and Edgar made their home in Prince Albert where he worked first at Burns then as a meat inspector for Agriculture Canada. He became a Lay Veterinarian with Health of Animals and spent many years testing and then supervising the testing of cattle herds. He was transferred to Regina where they lived for 7 years until his retirement when they moved to Candle Lake. In 2007 they returned to Prince Albert where they made their home until his passing. Edgar had an overriding sense of responsibility, first to his wife, Doreen, their children as well as extended family; then to his community involving himself in the establishment of the East Flat Community Association, Nisbett United Church, and the Cubs and Scouts of St. George Anglican Church. His involvement with the Cubs as Akela, brought him great pleasure and many long lasting connections with individual Cubs and Scouts. Edgar set an example for his family and community with his honesty, integrity, and respect for others. He loved to hunt and fish so living at Candle Lake was perfect for him. He and Doreen were active with the Candle Lake seniors and were instrumental in establishing the Sask-100. Edgar could do anything from building his own home to mechanical work to cabinet making. He particularly enjoyed wood turning and his involvement with the Prince Albert Wood Turners Guild. In the past few years his garden gave him great pleasure.
Edgar lived with gusto, enjoying nature, friends and family. He will be fondly remembered by his family and community and his influence will be with us always. A Celebration of Edgar's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Wesley United Church, 65 - 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Tony Thompson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation, Mont St. Joseph Home, or a charity of the donor's choice.
