DEXTER, Avis Eleanor, formerly of Clyde River, passed away peacefully at 92 years on June 1, 2012, surrounded by her family. Avis was the daughter of the late Winnifred (Newell) and LeBert Thomas. She was the faithful organist for St. Matthew’s United Church for over 40 years. Avis was a member for the Rebekah Lodge as well as a founding member of the Busy Bees community group supporting the church and the community of Clyde River. She was the councillor representing the Clyde River area for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne for almost 20 years, and held the position of Deputy Warden for a portion of that. Avis was the community historian and family genealogist. She could recall the past with the greatest of accuracy and was often asked to relate her memories of the old people and their stories by friends and family and sometimes even strangers. “Nan’s” greatest joy was her 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild. She loved to listen to the stories of their antics and their accomplishments and looked forward to every visit and phone call. She is survived by her children, James (Jean E.), Michael (Donna), Wanda (Bob), John (Sherry), Martha (Cal); grandchildren Michelle, Heather, James Wayde, Angela, Traci, Gillian, Kristin, Samantha, James, Jonathan, Neil, Terri, Craig, Sarah and Nicholas; great-grandchildren Ryan, Justin, Caleb, Connor, Cole, Chase, Spencer, Danielle, Kayla, Kassidy, Kiara, Brady, Kayden, Jerid, Grace, Patrick, Kallie, Matthew, Kelsey, Andrew, Connor and Lilli as well as great-great granddaughter Harlie and sister-in-law Marie Thomas. Avis was predeceased by her husband James Edgar, son Allen (in infancy), daughter Sandra (in infancy), son-in-law, Jimmie Crowell, brothers Hiram, Ted, Hilbert and Hersey; sisters, Ruby, Wanda (Peg) and Nettie. Cremation has taken place. The funeral service was held at St. Matthew’s United Church in Clyde River on Wednesday, June 6. A reception was held downstairs following the service. Family interment took place at the St. Matthew’s United Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Matthew’s United Church Building or Cemetery Fund or the Busy Bees Community Group.
