Sister Teresa Hannnigan, 98, formerly Sister Helen Joseph, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. She was in the 77th year of her religious life.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Chiasson) Hannigan.
Sr. Teresa entered the Sisters of St. Martha in Sept. 1932, and pronounced her first vows on July 9, 1934. She served in various health institutions of the congregation, having received training in laboratory and radiological fields. Sister was a registered laboratory technician with the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technicians, and a registered radiological technician with the Canadian and American Societies of Radiological Technicians.
In Nova Scotia, Sr. Teresa ministered in Glace Bay at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and in Inverness at St. Mary’s Hospital; in Alberta she served at Banff Mineral Springs Hospital and at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge; in Saskatchewan, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Broadview, St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, and at Martha House in Regina. In 1954 she followed a two-year correspondence course in Hospital Organization and Management and received her certification in London, Ont., in 1956.
In 1975, Sister retired from full time ministry and returned to Bethany, where she continued in active ministry at the motherhouse, with one year spent in Trenton at Christ the King Convent. Sr. Teresa served as local leader in five of the communities where she lived.
Sr. Teresa was the second youngest in a family of seven and was the last surviving member. She was predeceased by three sisters, Lillian, Sr. Helen Vincent and Mary Campbell, and by three brothers, Frank, Leo and William.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning today (Wednesday), June 6, at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 7, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
