Sweet (Eriksen), Phyllis Anne - Family and friends celebrate the life and achievements of Phyllis Anne Sweet, RN, 74, community organizer, award-winning public health pioneer, adventurer and devoted mum and grandmother, who died May 29, 2012, surrounded by family at her beloved at her beloved Aylesford Lake. She'd been battling leukemia for some years but told only a few trusted friends. Born in Vancouver, B.C. to Anna and Henry Eriksen, Phyllis graduated in 1959 from the renowned Victoria General Hospital/UBC School of Nursing and was posted to Kentville, with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON). In between community nursing and raising her family she threw herself into voluntary work, including Girl Guides and Meals on Wheels. An active member of Kentville’s United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, she provided much valued leadership for years on the board of Sherbrooke Lake United Church Camp. Professionally, Phyllis will be remembered for pioneering sexual health education in Nova Scotia. In the early 1980’s she led a pilot programme offering confidential advice on sexual health over the phone to young people. That led in 1990 to her setting up The Red Door in Kentville, a drop-in centre that has helped many thousands since. Its model has been replicated across the country. She went on to advise on a sexual health curriculum for schools and was instrumental in developing the province-wide SERN programme (Sexuality Education Resource Nurse). In 1997 she won the Nova Scotia Public Health Award for her outstanding contribution to youth sexual health education, and in 2000 received the Client/Public Health Advocacy Award from The College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia. On top of work and family Phyllis led a highly active life. She was a keen sailor, skier and swimmer, enjoyed rugged camping and was a menace at the poker table. An intrepid traveler, she had recently journeyed to Mexico and Thailand. She was predeceased by loving daughter, Jan, painter and designer. Among the many waving a fond goodbye are husband, George; sons, Mike and Rod; daughters in-law, Lesley and Kathy; son-in –law, Karsten; grandchildren, Megan, Lauren and James, Medford, N.S; Jack and Bobby, Toronto; Madeleine and Roberta, United Kingdom; brothers, Grant and Roy Campbell River, B.C.
