Roger Bonar Higgins
Higgins: Roger Bonar, Bible Hill, passed away peacefully at the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro on Monday, June 4, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Truro on March 18, 1924, Roger was the son of the late Muir and Georgina (Murray) Higgins. Roger was employed by T. Eaton Co., and R.S. Wilson as a meat cutter before embarking on a very rewarding career as a C.N. Police Officer for 37 years. He worked in all of the Atlantic Provinces. He retired as a Special Agent Police with C.N. His life was dedicated to his family, Church, and profession. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Roger was a member of the I.O.O.F. Phoenix Lodge #50 for over sixty years. He enjoyed “old time” music and was a member of the Good Time Senior Citizens Club. He loved to dance and was a caller for many square sets over the years. He had a passion for doing outdoor work on his property. Throughout his life Roger participated on various committees including Colchester County Council, Liberal Party Association, and Boy Scouts. In P.E.I. he played a major role on the Centennial Committee and had the opportunity to be at dinners with Queen Elizabeth in attendance. Roger also coached ball, and was a member of the Truro Minor Hockey Association. He was active in the Home and School Association in P.E.I. He taught St. John’s Ambulances courses to fellow police officers. Roger is survived by the love of his life, Shirley (Stiles) and his children, Linda (Laurie) Lynds, Sherry Clark, Brad (Tracy), Todd (Lori), Lisa (Nevin) Jackson, David (Jodi); grandchildren, Tim (Kelsey) Montgomery, Jennifer (Matt) Vaughan, Ryan and Nick Clark, Alexandria, Patrick, and Spenser Jackson, Ben, Jillian, and Lauren Higgins, Bobbi Joe and Sean Lynds; great grandson, William Montgomery, great granddaughter, Devilin Lynds; son-in-law, Donnie Montgomery, sisters-in-law, Eunice Higgins, Marg Higgins, many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Roger was predeceased by daughter Lori Yvonne Montgomery, brothers, Reginald and Phillip, son-in-law, Gordon Clark, sister-in-law, Eileen Higgins. He will be missed by his beloved dog, Zoey. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro, from where Roger’s family will receive friends on Friday evening, June 8 from 7-9pm, and where funeral service will be held 2pm Saturday, June 9, Mr. Stephen MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Interment will then be held in the Watson Cemetery, East Prince Street Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations in Roger’s memory may be made to the Ignite The Spirit Campaign for the Truro Civic Centre or the charity of your choice.
