It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Elsie Elaine Bateman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at the Northside General Hospital. Elsie passed away peacefully after a courageous 13 year battle with COPD, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, Elsie was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Evans) Collier.
She was a graduate of the business college in Halifax, and in her earlier years employed at the British Canadian Co-op in Sydney Mines and later with the Northside Victoria School Board until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
The matriarch of the family, Elsie enjoyed family vacations and spending time with the family.
She is survived by her loving husband, Melvin; her sons, Wilson (Cindy), Welland, Ont., Richard (Heather), Darren (Brenda), both of Kentville; and daughter, Sharon (Steve) Walker, Georges River; her beloved grandchildren; one brother, George (Verna) Collier, Sydney; and one sister, Joanne Poirier, Sydney; and also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, George Collier and Florence (Evans) Collier Osmond and brother-in-law, Jack Poirier.
Special thanks to Dr. Patrick O’Grady for his care of mom over the years and the many visits to her home, and also the nursing staff on 5th floor at the Northside General Hospital.
A funeral service for Elsie will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with Rev. Nick Philips officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
