Donald Wilfred Cummings

Cummings, Donald Wilfred, 80, With the guidance and support of Palliative Care and his family, Dad passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2012. He spent his final days in his favorite spot in the sunroom. Born in Wallace on November 10, 1931 he was the son of Ernest & Hattie (Boone) Cummings. Don retired after 37 years as a brakeman & conductor for CNR/VIA rail. Dad was a strong silent man who had a great passion for the outdoors. He loved to spend time hunting & fishing. An avid sportsman & fierce competitor, Dad always played to win no matter what the game. He was especially known for his drop ball when he pitched for the Truro Bearcats. Dad had a great sense of humor and was constantly playing practical jokes. He was the life of the party.
Don is survived by his loving and caring family; His wife of 56 years Olga (Taylor), daughters Kathy (Norman) Langille, Gloria (Bruce) Elliott, Tracey (Wayne McDonald)all of Truro. Grampie will be sadly missed by Abbey, Kurtis, Jenna, Ethan, Mat, Dan and Lee. Great-grandchildren Olivia and Logan. He is also survived by sisters Lola (Stewart) Lynds, North River, Margaret Johnson, Truro, Evelyn Sopher, Halifax and brothers Bob Cummings and Bill Cummings (Prince Edward Island).
Don is pre-deceased by sisters Melita Geldart, Jean Lambke, Mina Canning, Lois Smith, Dorothy Quigley and brothers Jim and Millard Rector.
Arrangements are under the care of Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. A private family service will be held with internment to take place in the Watson Cemetery, Truro. By family request donations may be made to Colchester East Hants Hospice Society or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Sue Gibbons for her exceptional care, as well as the VON.
