ROSSFIELD – Mary Christena Sutherland, 88, Haven Brook Manor, Riverton, formerly of Rossfield, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Blue Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Lionel Alexander and Jessie Laura (Campbell) MacLeod. Prior to marriage, she taught school in Marsh, Laggan and New Lairg. Mary was a member of Barney’s River Presbyterian Church, Kenzieville where she served as life elder, choir member and former Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and quilting group for 67 years and life member of the AMS. Mary was very active in her community, having served with the Barney’s River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Kenzieville Community Centre and as a trustee of Kenzieville Cemetery for many years. She greatly enjoyed quilting, needle crafts, genealogy and playing cards. During the past six years, Mary enjoyed making new friends at Haven Brook Manor. Most important to Mary was her family, who she dearly loved.
Surviving are her children, Donald (Florence) Sutherland, Springville; Reeta Sweeney, Enfield; Leon (Anna) Sutherland, Rossfield; William “Billy” (Ginette) Sutherland, Broadway; sister, Margaret “Nellie” (Duncan) Greene, Blue Mountain; grandchildren, Brian, Wanda, Julie, Jill, Joshua, Chantal, Nathan, Ellen and Mark; 14 great-grandchildren; niece, Kathy; nephew, David.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Irving Sutherland; son-in-law, Reg Sweeney.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Barney’s River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson and Rev. Larry Welch officiating. Interment will be in Kenzieville Cemetery.
