Marina Ida (Venera) Campbell, was born January 08, 1916 to Jim and Marianna Venera. Her parents had emigrated from Northern Italy to a small coal mining town, Coleman Alberta, in the Crows Nest Pass. Marina and her two younger sisters and one younger brother were all born and raised in Coleman, Alberta until in 1931, the coal mines suffered a slump and the family moved to the Peace River country, where her father bought land and farmed at South Dawson, BC.
Marina had a very keen mind, and while in school in Coleman, had skipped grades, and later on while finishing her schooling in South Dawson, achieved a teaching certificate so she could teach at Sweetwater, BC and other schools in the Peace area including teaching and subbing in Cherry Point, AB.
While working on a Dairy farm in South Dawson, she met Don Campbell who was also working on the local farms and Dairy farms. And soon were dating and then on December 06, 1939 they were married in Dawson Creek. Don moved his bride in with his parents across the Peace River until they finished their log cabin on their own Homestead in Cherry Point. Times were hard and difficult on the homestead with the work done by hand and the heavier work with horses. To help with income the couple trapped, in the winter and because wild game, and berries were plentiful, Marina did a lot of canning and gardening. Marina worked in a café in Dawson Creek during the Second World War to help make ends meet.
The oldest of five children, Bruce was born in 1944, followed with Randall, and Clinton, then two girls arrived Jolene and finally Norma. Marina loved her children and grandchildren alike. Marina always looked forward to the dances in the old schoolhouse, the community picnics, ballgames after church, the Christmas tree and concert, skating parties, fishing in the river, berry picking and harvest with the threshing machines and hungry crew man to feed.
Marina loved music and had a beautiful singing voice and sang at many dances, church and community gatherings. She loved the outdoors and the changing of the seasons, her roses, flowerbeds and loved animals. She liked baseball, hockey, curling and card games.
Marina was very talented, she could draw and write the most wonderful stories. She loved to read and she would read to her children in the evenings and read right up to a month or so before her passing. She would find an article in the paper or book and read it out loud to her care aids and nurses. She had a real knack for making homemade wine and beer, even but the most loved was her root beer.
Marina’s embroidery was known for miles around and won many a prize in fairs and exhibitions. She did beautiful crocheting, knitting and sewing. Her quilts were desired by all her children and grandchildren alike.
Later on in life, Marina became involved in political campaigns, was on the school board and active in the WI and other community organizations and committees. Marina was very instrumental in the writing of the community History book, “Always a River to Cross”.
On July 9, 2012 Marina crossed the Peace River for the last time today on her final journey home to be laid to rest with Don at her home community of Cherry Point. Marina lived a long fulfilling life, and was dearly loved and respected by many family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her, she touched each one of our hearts.
Marina passed away on July 03, 2012 in Fort St John, BC. A funeral service was held Monday, July 9, 2012 at the All Saints Anglican Church in Cherry Point Alberta with Peggy Bergeron officiating.
She was predeceased by her husband Don Campbell of 58 years, and son-in-law Alpat Knipple. Marina leaves behind her five children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild, and all of you, her friends, family and neighbours.
Until we meet again.
