Susan Whelan

Born In: Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: August 6th, 2012

Susan Whelan, of Sydney, passed away at home on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012.
Born in Saint John, N.B., Susan was the daughter of the late Willard and Joan (Burgess) Mitchell. She came to Cape Breton in 1966, making Sydney her lifelong home. She spent over 30 years as an administrator with Co-op Fuels in Ashby, establishing meaningful relationships with co-workers and customers alike.
Susan is survived by Brian, her devoted husband of 44 years; the children of which she was so proud; son, Paul (Rita), Sydney and daughter, Treena (Noel Farrell), Halifax; the grandchildren she adored, Mitchell, Hannah and Hollie, all of Sydney. She leaves behind her sister, Marie Peacock (David), Rothesay, N.B.; brothers, Willard Mitchell, Sydney, Barry Mitchell, Damascus, N.B. and Ray (Liz) Summerville, N.B.; several nieces and nephews and the “Whelan Clan”, Geraldine, Carolyn, JoAnn, Josie, Paul and Roy.
Susan leaves a legacy of courage and gentle caring to all that crossed her path. There was always that extra plate at her dinner table. Finding the largest turkey in Sydney became the gold standard in Susan and Brian’s home. Susan epitomized kindness and endured her illness with such grace.
In carrying out Susan’s wishes, a celebration of a loving life with family and close friends will be celebrated at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street at a later date.
No flowers please. Donations in Susan’s memory made to the Cape Breton palliative care unit, community program, would be very much appreciated by the family.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
