Lillian May Turnbull
Turnbull, Lillian May – 86, Truro passed away August 6, 2012. Born on January 9, 1926 in St John’s NL, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Caroline (Langer) Cox. She taught school in Fogo, NL and later went to the Magdalen Islands, Quebec, where she taught school for a number of years. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Church, Magdalen Islands, and much involved in community activities. She was an organist, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Anglican Church Women’s Association. In 1989 she became the receptor of the “Heart of Gold” award, given by Air Canada and the Community Newspaper for her outstanding contribution to her community. When she and her husband retired in 1990, they moved to Truro, Nova Scotia. She became a choir member of the St John’s Anglican Church and served faithfully. She loved singing and so joined the “Happy Harmonies” and performed with the group in many places including nursing homes. Her hobbies included cooking, crafts, traveling, dancing, bowling and writing poetry. She was a loving mother to and will be missed by: Carolyn Rushton (Dwain) Truro, Pauline Philbert (Rene), Limoges, ON , Sharon Goodbody (Ken) Rockland, ON, and Walter, Truro; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; three sisters and three brothers, NL. She was predeceased by her husband Walter and her brother Frank Cox. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or St John’s Anglican Church, Truro. A special thank you to Ruth and George Naugler, and to Elizabeth and Mark Blair for their love and care of our mother for four years, and also thanks to the staff at Shannex, Elk Court for their care and kindness during her last months with us. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 10 from 1-2 pm followed by a funeral service at 2 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating.
