Born In: British Columbia, Canada

Passed in: British Columbia, Canada

(Ernest) Grant Young. Gone fishing... or is it curling? Born: May 26, 1940 in Flin Flon, Manitoba Died: March 29, 2009 in Kamloops, British Columbia His wife Marilyn; sister, Claire (Dan) Niosi; children and grandchildren; Karla, Chris, Ethan and Erin Pincott; and Garth, Darla, Seth and Acacia Young wish to inform you of the death of their husband, brother, father and grandfather. He died peacefully after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers with Marilyn, Karla and Garth at his side. His friendly, outgoing personality helped him make and keep many friends throughout the years. His philosophy was "a stranger is a friend you haven't met yet". Always community minded, he willingly lent a helping hand to anyone who required it. Grant also spent many hours volunteering in many different aspects of sports. A devoted family man, he moved his family many times while working construction (a total of 15 times in the first 7 years of marriage). When Karla reached school age he chose to settle in Kamloops. He continued to work in construction until he eventually secured a job with BC Hydro. He worked there until his retirement in 1999. He loved sports. Baseball, golf and curling were his favourites. His greatest achievements in curling were competing in the Brier in 1981 as lead and in 1986 as the fifth man/coach. He curled in various leagues until March 2007. He enjoyed men's golf night and regularly attended into 2006. We would like to thank his sporting friends for their patience in helping him to continue enjoying these activities as long as he did. The Trout Festival in Flin Flon, held in July, was a special yearly holiday for Grant's family. It was a great time to reconnect with friends and relatives. Fishing, water-skiing, golfing, partying, dancing and lakeside activities were enjoyed by all. He was able to be at home until September 2008. He was then admitted to Overlander Extended Care Hospital where he received TLC from the staff. Thanks to Doctor Bill Stinson, Grant's caregivers at Overlander; especially those in Blueberry Lane, and Ponderosa Day Services staff. Donations to the Alzheimer's Society, Overlander Extended Care Hospital or a charity of one's choice are greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers. We invite friends and family to a farewell party for Grant at a later date in May. Contact a friend of Grant's for more information about the celebration.
