It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Johnny MacKay on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, July 12, 1922, he was the son of the late Dan and Ellen (Roberts) MacKay.
John is the last member of his immediate family.
Raised in Whitney Pier, he played hockey during his school years and loved to watch the ball games.
He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Holland, and a member of the Whitney Pier Legion branch 128.
He was a retired member of the Sydney police force, where he served 35 years, and was a member of the retired policeman’s association.
After retirement, Johnny spent many winters with Vera in St. Petersburg, Fla.
John is survived by his wife, Vera (Long); stepdaughters, Norma Lysecki, Carol MacKay, both of Sydney; daughter-in-law, Eleanor MacKay, Sydney; grandchildren, Kent MacPherson, David (Megan MacInnes) Lysecki, Heather (Darrell) Sidney, Marlene (Brian) O’Kane; great-grandchildren, D.J. and Brittany Sidney, Madeline O’Kane. He is also survived by his much loved nieces and nephews, Peggy Lou (George) Lundrigan, Ellen (Dave) Stewart, Elwin (Corrine) MacKay, Bob (Cathy) MacKay; many cousins, especially, Ray (Celia) Gosbee, Ruth and Elizabeth.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his two sisters, Annie and Mabel, brothers, Alex, Tom. Norman, D.J. and Elliott, two stepsons, John Wayne MacKay and Norman MacKay.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. Interment to follow at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
A special thanks to all who showed their love and support to John during his illness. Thank you to Dr. Zemerli and the staff who insured his care and comfort.
