THOMAS, Richard Willis Harold – 60, Digby, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and kids on Monday, August 13, 2012 in the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre (Infirmary Site), Halifax. Born December 10, 1951 in Digby, he was a son of Richard and Doris (Dennison) Thomas, Digby. He was a licensed electrician and worked most recently as a truck driver with Digby Salvage and Disposal, having also worked with Irving Oil as a burner mechanic, as well as working number of other jobs throughout his life. However, the job he most enjoyed was operating Mabel’s Fresh Produce stand with his wife for the past 20 years. Richard was very involved in the Scout movement, having served as a Scout Master. He enjoyed sport fishing, taking part in woodsman competitions and he loved bluegrass music. He was a witty and funny story teller, and he left a lasting impression on the people he met and got to know. Aside from his parents, Richard and Doris, he is survived by his loving wife, Mabel D. Thomas, as well as by his children, Rev. Richard (Katie), Jonesport, Maine, and Muriel (Jerry), Yarmouth, who will remember him fondly as a very loving husband and father. He was recently blessed with the birth of his first grandchild, Addison, whom he cherished dearly and to whom he loved singing “Old MacDonald”. Also surviving are sisters, Debbie (Davey) VanTassell, Gulliver’s Cove; Darlene (Scott) Thomas, Digby; a brother, Greg (Joanne) Thomas, Digby, as well as brothers-in-law, Roland (Lorraine) Shea, Ontario and Lou (Chris) Shea, Carter’s Cove, Newfoundland; a sister-in-law, Brenda (Dave) Tudjan, Calgary; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, there was no visitation. A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, August 17 at the Digby Baptist Church, his son, Rev. Richard Thomas, officiated. Memorial donations may be made to Halifax Haven Guest House, whose staff the family would like to thank for their kind deeds and words during their stay throughout Richard’s illness.
