Robert Heye, CNR trainman (retired), has "jiggled off down the track" to his final destination. Although his was a life well lived, our hearts are deeply saddened as we wave a final goodbye.

Bobby was born the third of four boys to William and Margaret (Hawkins) Heye in Swift Current Saskatchewan on March 25, 1924. While he was a young boy the family moved and homesteaded in Mayerthorpe, Alberta. From there, Bob moved to Prince George where he worked as a conductor for CNR and raised a family of five.

In 1972, Bob transferred to Kamloops where he worked until his retirement in 1987. Bob served in many capacities, including President, in the union. He was particularly notable for his expertise in running union meetings according to Roberts' Rules. Everything was done in orderly fashion.

Bob volunteered in many capacities in the community over the years. He was President of the Senior's Society when Desert Gardens was developed and built. In addition to acting as president he coordinated the woodworking shop. He was the official fixer-upper and odd job man. He also taught woodworking classes to women and worked with clients from Mental Health. He was especially famous for his pancake breakfast along with the many Japanese students who assisted him.

Bob drove the train at the Wildlife Park where he loved the children, teased the adults, and occasionally allowed someone to blow the whistle.

Bob served for many years with the Lions Club, both in Prince George and in Kamloops. He held many executive positions especially as President and attained the honour of 100% President.

Bob was particularly proud of his status as card-carrying member of the International Order of Old Bastards.

Bob celebrated many achievements and many things during his 88 years but his best achievements were his children. His door was always open to us and our friends, whatever their age and stage in life. He supported various and sundry young people through trials and tribulations and was truly loved by all. He was a very giving man and many have benefitted from his generosity. We will miss him dearly.

Dad is survived by his five children: Daniel, Roanda (Uwe), William, Roxana (Gary) and Robin (Wendy); seven grandchildren: Carmon, Naomi, Theodore, Megan, Yvette, Adam and Jessie; and three great-grandchildren: Elisa, Kalen and Jasper.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday August 20, at Desert Gardens, 11:00 a.m. Please come with your stories to share. From all Bob's Japanese friends, Matane.
