John 'Heckie' MacKinnon

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Hector MacKinnon, 87, at the Northside General Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012.
Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, Heckie was a son of the late Angus and Mabel (MacQuarrie) MacKinnon.
Heckie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. Heckie worked for over 40 years in the coal mines and at one time was employed as an overman. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the New Waterford Pensioners' Club and in earlier years, a member of the New Victoria Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Rose (Kyte/Steele); daughters Colleen MacKinnon (Joe Roach), New Victoria, Wanda (Mervin) O’Brien, Guelph, Ont; son Hector Jr. (Glenda), New Waterford; brother Harold, Richmond, B.C.; sisters Marie MacKinnon, New Victoria, Tuddie Bisson, New Waterford; stepchildren, Harvey (Carmie) Steele, Alder Point, Glen (Sheila), Sydney Mines, Marlene (Ralph) Tremblett, Scarborough, Ont., Brenda (Darryle) Pyke, Sydney Mines; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Charmaine (Kearney) MacKinnon; brothers John R., Nandy, Bede and a sister Jessie.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, New Victoria with a luncheon to follow at the K.O.C. Hall on Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
