Margaret A. “Margie” Scanlan (nee Campbell) of MacPherson’s Mills, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, passed away in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit on September 11, 2012 at the age of 66 after a short struggle with cancer.
Born in the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow on September 7, 1946, daughter of Ethel L. (Fraser) and the late James Almon Campbell, Margie was the second of four sisters.
On August 16, 1969 at the Garden of Eden Presbyterian Church, Margie married Robert (Bob) Scanlan, currently of Lyons Brook, NS. On November 29th, 1977, Margie was blessed with daughter Laurel (Rob) MacLeod, currently of New Glasgow. After a divorce from her husband, Margie moved to her house in MacPherson’s Mills, where she spent her days gardening, making home-made wine, working at the Rest-Stop Tim Horton’s on Exit 21, and caring for her mother Ethel. Always involved in the community, she was a former member of the MacPherson’s Mills Women’s Institute and Community Club, along with the Ladies Auxiliary to the Thorburn Fire Department. Renowned for her kindness and humor, Margie’s greatest joy in life was the time spent with her family, each member of which could always rely on her help in times of need and good company in times of plenty. Even in her final months, she managed to find abundant reasons to smile, and was still nearly unbeatable in a game of crib.
Along with her mother, daughter, and ex-husband, Margie is survived by sisters Mary (Gerry) Kienas of Maple Ridge, B.C., and Ruth (David) MacLeod of MacPherson’s Mills, along with aunt, uncle and cousin Isabel, Dennis and Matthew Moat, of Kent, England, and cousin Louise (nee Moat) of Fife, Scotland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews on this side of the Atlantic. She is also survived by “adopted daughters” Cathy Wilkinson of Broadway, N.S. and Jeanne Cameron-Leeson of Squamish, B.C, along with beloved sister at heart, Pat MacDonald of New Glasgow.
Along with her father, Margie was predeceased by sister Isabel (Izzie) Joyce Vance-Lewis and her first husband Henry Vance and second husband Ken Lewis of MacPherson’s Mills.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday with Louis Van Donick officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Eden Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Margie’s memory can be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Society.
Margie wished to thank the nurses and other medical staff of the Aberdeen Hospital, along with her many visitors and well-wishers, who brought her a measure of joy and comfort.
