It is with sad hearts that we announce the sudden death of Helen on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, while visiting her son and daughter and their families in West Kelowna, B.C.
Helen taught night school in New Waterford for many years and she was involved in many community activities such as: CWL, Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul, the Liberal party, Exercise for Seniors, Maple Hill Auxiliary and Aging Gracefully. In her later years she began quilting, joined the River Ryan quilting club and was a member of Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design. All her loved ones have benefited from her quilting skills as well as many organizations which used the quilts for fund raising.
She has gone to join her dear husband, John (2005), her parents, her sisters, Jean and Mary and her dear niece, Susan.
She is survived by their daughters, Coleen, New Victoria, Elaine (Angus) Gillis, New Waterford, Ann Marie (Henning) Hansen, Westbank, B.C., and their son, John (Marylynn), West Kelowna, B.C.; her brothers, Bennett (Ida), New Brunswick, and Jackie (Irene), Ontario; and her sister, Joanne (Ray) Armstrong, Sydney. She was a loving grandmother to Jamie (Bonnie-Lee) Hansen, West Kelowna, Diane (Andrea) Ragazzi, Whitby, Ont., Corry, New Waterford, Karri Gillis and BJ (Tara), Moncton, N.B. Michelle, John Patrick and Sean Ryan, West Kelowna, B.C. She was proud to be a great-grandmother to Heather, Ontario, Zachery and Stephanie MacMaster, New Waterford, Devon, New Waterford, and Taylor Gillis, Moncton, N.B., Megan and Morgan Hansen, West Kelowna, B.C., Kyle Phinney, Cold Lake, Alta., Michael Ragazzi, Whitby, Ont.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Helen will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home in New Waterford. Rosary will be celebrated by Aging Gracefully at 6:30 p.m. The funeral mass will be officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mt. Carmel Ave., New Waterford. Interment in St Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria, followed by a reception in parish center, Convent Street.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mclellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
