It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Robert Carson Porter, age 84, announce his peaceful passing at Northumberland Hall, Amherst on Monday, September 17, 2012 while surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Hastings, he was the youngest son of the late Walter and Sadie (Carter) Porter and the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Robert operated the family farm for many years and was Manager of the Maritime Beef Test Station in Nappan for 21 years, retiring in 1992. At the time he was honoured by the Maritime Beef Testing Society with a Long Term Service Award. He was a member of Trinity St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst where he participated in Friends Unlimited. Robert belonged to the Good Sam campers and enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV. He was a member of the Cumberland Twirlers Square Dancers. He enjoyed playing cards, downhill skiing, and especially being outdoors working on his land and in the woods.
Robert will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Beatrice Marina (Brooks) Porter and daughters, Marilyn (Leslie) Stewart, Hastings, Susan (Stephen) Ehrhardt, New Glasgow, Christine (John) Swan, Oxford, Sandra (Richard) Beale, Sackville, NB and Janet (Grant) Patterson, Hastings; grandchildren, Matthew, Lisa, Andrea, Alison, Courtney, Mitchell, Brittany, Amanda, Denise, Leah and Michael as well as three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by brothers George, Russell, Ernest, Lorne, Leon, Lyman, Lloyd and sisters Myrtle Black and Pearl Bacon.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777). There will be no visitation. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 2 pm, Rev. Susan Estabrooks officiating. Burial will take place in the Hastings Cemetery.
