It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, Edith Cavell Lawrence at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012.
Born in the old General Hospital in 1920, she was the daughter of the late George and Maud Boutilier, Port Morien.
In her younger days she was very active in societies. She was past president of the Girl Guides Association of Glace Bay and past president of St. Anthony’s and St. Anne’s Society. She also held offices in Home and School Association’s, Ladies P.C. Association and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Drama Club and St. Anthony’s Mixed Choir. She was one of the first women to form the Breast Cancer Society in Glace Bay. She was an honorary member of the Coal Town Chorus and held office as treasurer for eight years before ill health forced her to retire.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Elias in 1997.
She is survived by three sons, Howard (Diane) Glace Bay, David (Denise) Halifax, Michael (Tracey), Port Morien; six daughters, Yvonne, Houston, Texas, Valerie, Fredericton, N.B., Dale (Anthony), Ontario, Rhonda Lynn (Jimmy), Dartmouth, Cynthia, Australia, Miriam (Peter), Vancouver, B.C.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Monday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Church. The Rev. Norman MacPhee will officiate. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
