Fredrick Jerome "Jerry" Matters

Jerry, at age 75, of Oakville, Ontario, passed away September 4, 2012 at the Ian Anderson House, after a quiet struggle with cancer.
Born on July 2, 1937 in Westmoreland, Prince Edward Island, he was the son of Freddie and Marguerite Matters.
He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey (Shreenan) Matters, who was the mother of his children, Randy, Kevin and Sandra.
He grew up on a farm where he learned the values of hard work and honesty. A graduate of the Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, Jerry taught for a brief period of time and then started his long career (41years) with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Crapaud, P.E.I. Often moving with the bank he also worked in O’Leary, P.E.I.; Woodstock, N.B.; Sussex, N.B.; Saint John, N.B.; and finally in the bank’s head office in Toronto where he held numerous positions over the years. He was very proud to have worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia.
During his working life, he was a devoted family man who worked hard to provide for his family. He always enjoyed his trips back to Prince Edward Island to visit family. In retirement, he enjoyed using his carpentry and handyman skills on his home in Oakville along with many properties owned over the years in Florida. Jerry and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed many winters in Florida fixing up places and spending time with friends. Jerry enjoyed community service and was actively involved on his condo board, Meals on Wheels and Knights of Columbus. A constant throughout Jerry’s life was his strong Catholic faith, which guided many of his actions during his life and gave him peace at the end of his life on earth.
Jerry leaves his wife, Barbara Matters; children, Randy Matters (Joanne), Kevin Matters (Michelle), Sandra Epping (Ron), Steven Elphick (Paula), Brad Elphick (Shelly), Diane Sealy (James), Barb Ferguson (Brian) and Nanci Stubbington (Scott). Much loved by his grandchildren, Christopher, Jordan, Theresa (David), Kendra, Connor, Maggie, Melanie, Brett, Brooke, Joshua, Megan and Trinity; his great-granddaughter, who will carry on his legacy of hard work and excellence. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond Matters (Mary); sister, Colette Stordy; and sisters-in-law, Rita Matters, Noreen Porter; and brothers-in-law, Joe Shreenan and Reg Shreenan.
