(September 10, 1923 - September 30, 2012). Merchant Navy, World War II. Passed peacefully away at the Sir Winston Churchill Wing of the Caribou Memorial Veteran’s Pavilion, Gordon Pennell, aged 89 years. Predeceased by wife Ivy (nee Bown) (2010); sister Mary Hale of Twillingate; and parents Ethel and George Pennell. Leaving to mourn his children, daughters: Joan (Fred Squires), Lynda Holden; sons: Lloyd (Tara), and Paul (Cathy). Also leaving to mourn, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, special friends Shirley & Vick Biddiscombe, as well as other friends and relatives, especially his “other family” who took good care of him at the Veteran’s Pavilion. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Tuesday, October 2, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m., and on Wednesday, October 3, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Barrett’s Funeral Chapel on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m., with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Gordon’s memory to The Jim Shields Memorial Garden, c/o Veteran’s Pavilion or Wesley United Church.
