We, the family, regret to announce the sudden passing of Garfield MacPhee of Glace Bay. Gar passed away on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Walter and Catherine (MacDonald) MacPhee and was a devoted member of St. Anthony's Church.
Retiring in 2006 from Nova Scotia Power after 46 years of service, Gar was the longest serving employee to have worked for the company. He took great pride in his work and believed in doing everything to the best of his ability.
Gar loved nothing more than spending time with his four grandchildren, taking every March break off to be with them. He loved them with all his heart and soul; they will truly miss their Papa. Garfield was also an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan, often seen sporting a Hawks hat.
A quiet and gentle man of great integrity, who always put others before himself. He was a loving husband and father who new the true meaning of family.
Garfield will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Colette (Kelloway); son, Garfield ‘Gar’ (Joelene), Sydney; daughters, Shirley (Ron) Popwell, Mira, and Paulette (Cameron McPhee), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Britney and Jeffrey MacPhee, Lauren and Jordan Popwell; sisters, Shirley MacMullin, Cleo Tobin, Bernice Nickituk, all of Glace Bay, Joan (Eric) Parsons, Maureen Robertson, both of Sydney; brother, Kelly (Ann), Halifax; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Garfield was predeceased by a brother, Walter; sister Florence; brothers in-law Michael MacMullin, John Tobin, Thomas Farrell, Peter Nickituk and Jack Robertson.
In honoring Garfield’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Visitation for Garfield will be held Sunday, October 7, 2012, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
Memorial donations in Gar's memory may be made to the St. Anthony's Cemetery Fund, or a charity of one's choice.
