It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Catherine Ley at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Catherine was the daughter of the late Micheal W. and Jane (Burke) Kennedy.
Born in Glace Bay, she lived most of her life in Little Lorraine. Catherine’s mother passed away when she was 14, leaving her to raise her siblings while her father fished. She also worked various jobs: the Main-a-Dieu Lobster Canning Plant, The Maple Leaf Restaurant and did housekeeping in various homes in Louisbourg and Glace Bay, which she often spoke of fondly.
Catherine was a member of the Catholic Womens League, Club 55 of Sydney, and the Louisbourg Senior’s Club.
She is survived by children, Jane (Ashley) MacLeod, Port Hastings, Susan (Grant) MacDonald, Sydney Forks, Mary MacEachern, Kay Cuddihy, Sydney, Michael (Ann), Louisbourg, James (Donna) Port Hardy, B.C., Sandy, Joey, Little Lorraine, Vincent (Kathleen), Howie Center, Gloria (Sandy) Spencer, Main-a-Dieu; and “adopted” children, Lillian (Hawco) Corbett and Johnny MacDonald; brother, Joseph (Mary), Tower Road; sisters, Susan (Sylvester) Burke, Catalone, and Vera MacIsaac, Ontario; 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bryden, brothers, Vincent, Fraser, Jim and Charlie, sisters, Cleo, Bridget, Helen and Mary.
Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu, on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held Friday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, with Fr. Raj. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Cemetery Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
