With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of a loving husband, father and friend. Michael ‘Mick’ Kelloway, 73, of Glace Bay, N.S., passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., Mick grew up in Churchill Centre, New Aberdeen. He was the son of the late William and Mary (Mahe) Kelloway.
Mick worked with the Cape Breton Development Corporation for over 40 years. During this time, he was a draegerman for 10 years. He and his team competed in mine rescue competitions across Canada and internationally, winning many top awards. Mick was well respected by his peers for his leadership, especially in crisis situations. Mick was one of the first responders at the No. 26 Colliery fire and Westray Mine disaster.
As a man committed to family and friends, Mick was always willing to lend a helping hand to others and he and Delores’ home was always open.
Mick is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Delores (Ford); and son, Michael (Catherine); as well as his sisters, Rose (John Chauder) and Sabina (Alfred MacPherson).
Besides his parents, Mick was predeceased by his brother, Fermin.
Mick enjoyed a quiet rum on a Sunday afternoon or just sitting around a bon fire with family and friends. He was a good man who enjoyed the simple pleasures that life offered.
Visitation for Mick will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church foyer. Cremation will take place with interment at a later date.
Family flowers only please. Donations in Mick’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
