Mary Susan Lyons, age 83, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the Glace Bay Hospital, with her children and family around her.
Born in Port Morien, Mary was the daughter of the late Clarence and Freda (Frank) MacDonald.
Mary was a member of St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin. Mary enjoyed teaching at Donkin Elementary and Gowrie Memorial School in Morien for many years before her retirement. A loving and gentle person, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Mary excelled at being a mother, cooking, baking and gardening. She never lost her sense of humour as she struggled with Parkinson’s and other illnesses. She was a shining example of a life well-lived.
Mary will be sadly missed by her son, James (Andrea); her daughter, Jennifer (David MacDonald); sisters, Viola Turnbull, Rita Tutty, Evie (Cecil) Cruickshank, Gennie (Bill Gilfoy) Green; brothers, Alfie MacDonald, Dougie (Cathy) MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Lily Lyons, Joan MacDonald, Christine Lyons and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

To all who helped our family throughout the illness and loss of our mother, your kindness will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go to Gennie and Kim Green, Lily Lyons, Myrna Murphy, Dale Boone, Pam Forward, Doris and Megan Butts, for your support and devotion to Mary. A very special thank you to Dr. Michael Gallivan and the nursing staff at the Glace Bay Hospital 3rd floor and Cape Breton County Homemakers for your outstanding compassion and medical care.
Cremation has taken place in honour of Mary’s wishes under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. on Friday at St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin with the Rev. Chris Matheson officiating. Interment will follow in Black Brook Cemetery.
