It is will great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our strong and courageous mother, grandmother and great grandmother on Oct. 19, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Rocky Harbour, N.L., Feb. 25, 1925, she was the last surviving member of her family, daughter of the late Wilson and Ella Oates.
Bessie worked for Woolco in the men’s wear department (Grafton & Fraser) until she retired. She enjoyed travelling, bowling, darts, bingo and time at the Casino with her niece and namesake “Bessie”. She had a fondness for knitting and going to flea markets and crafts shows. Bessie always enjoyed a good joke and sharing a laugh with family and friends and will be remembered fondly for her hardy laugh and bright smile. She also took great pleasure in winning at crib often outplaying her sons and grandsons. Bessie lived life to the fullest.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Peter Skrypnick, loving daughter, Catherine Webb, brothers, Fred, Malcolm and Walter Oates.
She is survived by her loving husband, Douglas; daughter, Sandra MacLeod, Sydney; and sons, Bill (Josephine) Skrypnick, British Columbia, Terry Skrypnick, Sydney, David Skrypnick (Gail), New Victoria; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her stepdaughters, Jill (Jack), Manitoba, and Pam, Campbell River, B.C.; and a stepson, Ian, Montreal, Que.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating.
Memorials in her memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
