We regret to announce the passing of Petronella Maria Gielen Rooijakkers, 89, on Oct. 21, 2012, at the Northside Guest Home, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Vlierden, Netherlands on July 3, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Martinus Rooijakkers and Everdina Santegoeds.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s parish, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her children, Maria Gielen, Englishtown, N.S., Matt and Loretta Gielen, Millville, N.S., Martien and Linda Gielen, Truro, N.S., Joe and Carol Ann Gielen, Calgary, Alta., Leonard and Brenda Gielen, Strathmore, Alta., Peter and Darlene Gielen, Millville, N.S., Henry and Betty Gielen, Calgary, Alta., John Gielen and Esther Maxwell, Calgary, Alta., Antoinette Gielen and Randy Beiko, Calgary, Alta., Gert and Frazer MacGregor, Nyanza, N.S., Sylvia and Ken Nunn, Big Bras d’Or, N.S. Her 27 grandchildren, John L. and Missy, Jeannie and Dan, Josephine and Trevor, Matthew, Martina and John, Mark, Marcia and Gord, Michael and Dayna, Dallas and Amy, Deanna and Doug, Alexander, Adam, Lee, Melanie and Chad, Pete and Maggie, Rachael, Krista, Jonathan and Stephanie, Katie, Chris and Nora, Marcella, Sarah, Wesley, Lacy and Stew, Ellen and Kenneth, Chris, Daniel. Her 17 great-grandchildren, Dina, Madeleine, Isabelle, Tiernan, Kristen, Carter, Blake, Samatha, Hayley, James, Mikayla, Jack, Lauryn, Ashlynn, Catherine, Charlotte, Hudson. She is survived by her brothers, Antony and Henrica Rooijakkers, West Bay Road, N.S., Pieter and Tineke Rooijakkers, Brouwhuis, Netherlands; and her sister, Tineke van Els, Elsendorp, Netherlands. She also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by our sister, Dina Gielen (1978), our father, Leonardus Gielen (1992), four brothers and five sisters.
Visitation for Petronella Maria Gielen will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the parish hall, following the service.
Donations in her memory may be made to the IWK foundation in Halifax.
