Donald Francis MacDougall

MacDougall, Donald Francis - 54: Vancouver / Truro, passed away suddenly on October 21, 2012, after a brief illness with cancer. Born in Truro, NS, Donald was the son of R. Lorne MacDougall and the late Elizabeth (Grant) MacDougall. Donald graduated with a B.A. from St. Francis Xavier, B. Ed. from Saint Mary’s University and a Masters of Education from the University of British Columbia. He had submitted his final thesis for his PhD in Art Education from the University of British Columbia. Donald spent the last twenty years teaching in Vancouver at Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Joseph Elementary schools. Donald was born to teach and was loved by his students and fellow staff members. Although those who knew Donald may not have always agreed with his methods, he was single minded when it came to getting the job done. His many friends from Truro will remember his leadership in quarterbacking the Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars to two consecutive provincial championships. When a reporter called him a shot-put artist, he was furious and only more determined to succeed. Donald had a natural talent for art from a very young age. He studied art and was an accomplished painter, which he incorporated into his teaching skills. In recent years, Donald would enjoy speaking of the philosophies of Deleuze and Spinoza while watching football on Sunday afternoons. There were many sides to Mence that not everyone saw. Donald had many dear and close friends, but none closer than his good friend Dr. Luke Napier who supported him through his illness. He is survived by his father, Lorne; stepson, Reid; siblings, Helen May, John (Mary), Mary, Joe, Bill (Tanis), Chris (Karen), Bobb, Jamie (Tracey), Greg (Jane); and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth; brother, Ralph; and nephew, Charlie. Visitation will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24th at the Immaculate Conception Parish on Prince Street in Truro. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, October 25th at the same location. Donations in memory of Donald may be made to Mental Health Care, Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation at 207 Willow Street, Truro, B2N 5A1.
