Born in Baddeck, he was the son of the late Daniel and Sarah (MacDonald) MacIver.
He attended St. F.X University and graduated in 1957 with a B.A. in Philosophy. He went on to study at McGill University Presbyterian College in Montreal and received a B.A. in Divinity. Malcolm was a lifelong Montreal Canadians fan. His love of the Habs began in the 1950's as he watched great players such as the Rocket and Jean Beliveau from a bench in the Montreal Forum. More recently he was an extremely proud owner of a Habs Jersey given to him by George Piercy.
Following University Graduation he was employed with Provincial Child Welfare Services and finished his career with Canada Employment and Immigration, in Sydney and New Waterford, retiring in 1991.
Malcolm was an avid reader and writer; a past member of the Southend Community Centre Writing Club. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney and delighted in the company of fellow parishioners at their church coffee club gatherings.
He spent many summers in Tarbot over the years and liked nothing better than to be fishing mackerel in Englishtown. He loved his many trips to Newfoundland and never forgot the time spent and bonds he forged with friends and family he met there.
Malcolm is survived by his loving daughter, Deborah (Terry) MacPherson, Sydney, his pride and joy; his four grandchildren, Terri, John, Calum and Madeline. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jutta Anderson, several nieces and nephews, as well as his canine and feline companions.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife and best friend, Irene (Anderson). Sisters: Rachel, Anna, and Nellie. Brothers: Danny and Johnny, Murdock and Kitchner. Sisters-in-law: Bertha Eastman, Bessie Coolen and brother-in-law, Albert Anderson.
