John 'Jack' Dowe

Born In: Glace Bay

Passed on: November 6th, 2012

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of John Robert ‘Jack’ Dowe, 76, of Glace Bay. Jack passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.
Born in Glace Bay, Jack was the son of the late Norris and Margaret (MacIntyre) Dowe.
Many people will remember Jack for his love of gardening. His family will forever remember his orderly colour installation of flowers. Many friends and family benefited from the numerous jars of preserves that came from his gardens and his fruit trees over the years. Although Jack had retired from the coal mining industry in 1990, he never stopped working, whether on his latest project around his home or at his favourite place in Benacadie. In the last years, Jack and Betty would spend their winters among friends and family enjoying the warmth of Florida.
Jack leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Betty (MacLennan); his daughters, Audrey (Joe) Deveaux of Cole Harbour, N.S., Michele (Lloyd) Sparling of Oakville, Ont.; and his four grandchildren, Patrick, Beth, Logan and Rachel whom he cherished. Left to mourn as well are his brothers, Norris ‘Bud’, Lonnie (Yvonne), Kevin (Gina) and Donald (Diane); his sisters, Doris Farrell, Audrey and Anne (Ray) Lawrence; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends in both Canada and the USA.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, his parents-in-law, John Neil and Catherine MacLennan, his brothers-in-law, Wayne Farrell and Sandy MacLennan.
Visitation will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay on Friday, Nov.r 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church foyer. Interment will take place in the Christmas Island Cemetery on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jack's memory be made to the Salvation Army or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
