The Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame regret to announce the passing of Sister Catherine MacInnis, CND at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012.
Sister Catherine was born on Oct. 19, 1926, the daughter of the late Dan F. MacInnis and Mary Anne (MacKenzie) MacInnis of Grand Narrows, Cape Breton.
She entered the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame in August 1946 and was professed in August 1948. An exemplary teacher, Sister Catherine taught for 30 years in elementary schools on the mainland of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, including First Nations. After retiring from teaching, she did volunteer work in schools and hospitals in Sydney and with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. For the past 32 years, Sister Catherine resided at St. Theresa Convent, Sydney, and was an active member of St. Theresa parish including the Senior Choir. Since November 2011, Sister Catherine lived of Parkland Cape Breton, Notre Dame Community.
Sister Catherine’s whole life was characterized by generosity, humility and great love for others. She endeared herself to her students and all those with whom she came in contact.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers, James, Joseph, Neil, Lloyd and Howard, sisters, Mary Helen (Girlie), Sister Rita MacInnis, CND, Josephine (Mickie).
Sister Catherine is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who loved her dearly.
Visitation will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Due to the fact that St. Theresa Church is presently unavailable, the funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Cabot Street, Sydney, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. Rev. Jim Oliver, Parish Priest of St. Theresa Parish, will officiate. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
