Howard 'Howie' Hoban

After a full life Howie passed away with his wife and daughter by his side at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Nov. 9, 2012.
He will always be remembered by his wife, Dorothy (Kelly) of 58 years; daughter, Gail (John) Hoar, Dartmouth; and son, Walter (Michelle), Ottawa; granddaughters he adored, Riley, Keegan and Maeve Hoban, Ottawa.
Born in Sydney in 1931, he attended Ashby school and spent his working years at Eatons, K-Mart and Charlie Joe’s Furniture. After retiring he had many enjoyable trips with friends to Europe and various locations in the U.S.
Howie loved to golf, skate, hockey, walk, morning coffees, summers at Mira and good friends. He was a man who had time to listen to others and offer any help that he could as he was a genuine Mr. Fix-it. His yard and garden were one of his joys along with the love of creating and building works of art from recycled materials. A member of the Old Sydney Society and a former member of the Seaview Golf Club and the CN Pensioners bowling league.
He is also survived by his mother, Naomi Hoban; brother, Bill, Sydney; sister, Mildred, Ontario; nieces and nephews, and loving in-laws from Antigonish and Ontario.
Besides his father, Arch, he was predeceased by his sister, Jeanette Hartley.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday Nov. 17, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 12-2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow.
