On Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, Allie passed away surrounded by his loving family at Seaview Manor in Glace Bay, where he had resided for the past five years.
Born in Glace Bay, Allie was the son of the late Isaac and Catherine (Haley) Batten.
He was a longtime resident of Tablehead and was a member of St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay. As a young man, Allie was an avid softball player, playing with several local teams including the Oland’s Bay By’s and the Glace Bay Miners Senior baseball league. He was employed with the Dominion Coal Company (Devco) for 44 years as an iron worker. Allie was also an avid hunter and fisherman enjoying many hunting and fishing trips to St. Peters. He also enjoyed his Thursday and Saturday card games and bowling with the colliery league. Most of all, Allie was a devoted husband, a very caring, kind and gentle man with family being his main priority.
Twenty years ago, Allie was given the gift of life through a kidney transplant, the donor being his eldest daughter, Catherine. Allie’s family and friends will forever be grateful for the times and memories created through organ donation.
Left to mourn are his daughters, Catherine (Peter) Byrne, Ginny (Kevin) Burke; sons, Joe (Debbie) and Allie (Dawn), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Kathleen, Toronto, Emmaline, Halifax, Sister Cecelia Catherine, Glace Bay, Ann Marie (Jimmy) McDonald, Grand Cache, Gert, Glace Bay; brothers, Jim, Glace Bay, Naish (Elvira), Glace Bay, Tom, Smith falls, Phil (Ruth), Grand Cache. Also surviving are cherished grandchildren, Pixie (Tom) Slade, Peter (Rhonda) Byrne, Cindy (Joe) MacDonald, Annette (Jody) Dauphinee, Danny (Kim) Pimentel, Joe (Bev) Pimentel, Lisa (Chris) Vokey, Chris (Kim) Batten, Elaine (Michael) Gaetan, Erin Batten, Amanda (Sandy O’Neill) Batten, Allan Batten; step-grandchildren, Tracey Burke and Cherie (Dave) Grabman; 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister-law, Violet Campbell. Also, special lifetime friends the Schumacher family of St. Peters and his card playing partners, Betty Dearing and Dodi Campbell.
Besides his parents, Allie was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Kathleen (Nightingale), sister, Jenny (Steve) McCormack, brothers, Joe, Ike (Sis) and Jack (Toots) and sister in-law, ‘Al’ Batten
Visitation for Allie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Cremation will take place with burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Allie’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Kidney Foundation.
At this time, we, Allie’s family would like to thank the staff and medical personnel at Seaview Manor for their compassion and care, given to our dad, especially during his final days.
