It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Katherina Bernard on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford.
Our mother, grandmother was the most loving, kind and caring mother with a wonderful sense of humour. She enjoyed all of our many family gatherings and especially spending time with her grandchildren. We will always cherish our memories of our dear mother.
Katherina was a Dutch war bride who moved to Canada 1947 to join her husband William J. Bernard who was a Second World War veteran.
Katherina was a seamstress until she retired from Saint Rita’s Hospital in Sydney. She also taught sewing classes in Eskasoni, Membertou and Chapel Island. She was also the first non-native to be elected to council in Eskasoni. After she retired, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and bead work.
She was predeceased by her husband, William ‘Bill’ J. Bernard who passed away in 1995. She was also predeceased by her parents of Nijmegen, Holland, Gradus Leenders and Engelberta Maria Campfens and by nine brothers and two sisters, Lambertus ‘Lam’ Cornelis Leenders, Kees Cornelis Lambertus Leenders, Gerard Theodorus Leenders, Petrus Hubertus Leenders, Theodorus ‘Theo’ Hubertus Leenders, Adrianus ‘Ad’ Josephus Leenders, Johannes ‘Jon’ Maria Leenders, Jacobus Canisius ‘Jacques’ Leenders, Franciscus ‘Frans’ Canisius Leenders, and sisters, Johanna Marie (Riet Marie) Hopman and Engelberta Johanna (Lien) Leenders.
Toos is survived by her 12 children, one brother and two sisters, Angel Pilch, Toronto, Eva Bernard, Sydney, Gerald Noel Bernard, Sydney, Joseph Gordon Bernard, Eskasoni, Theresa Martin, Truro, Rose Anne Bernard, Halifax, Agnes Sheffield, Mississippi, Irene Bordelon, Virginia, Lucina Bernard, Dartmouth, Michael William Bernard, Eskasoni, Margareth Poulette, Eskasoni, Tommy Bernard, Eskasoni.
She is also survived by two sisters and a brother all living in Holland, Huberta Petronella ‘Berti’ Leenders, Antonia Maria ‘Ton’ Leenders; and her youngest brother Aloysius Antonius ‘Aloys’ Leenders.
She is also survived by 38 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni, after 7 p.m. and continue Wednesday, Nov. 21. The funeral mass will take place 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at the Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment to follow.
